Getting stronger...

Just a brief update for you all regarding the progress of what I have growing in the garden...

First of all, a lot of action with the runner beans...! I counted the other day and I have over 50 formed bean pods from four plants, so it won't be long now before I have to think of 101 different ways to use them!

The radishes, that had taken a pounding the other week from Mr Snail, have now grown their second set of leaves, and even the ones that were mostly eaten have staged a mini-revival of sorts.

Some very promising beetroot seedlings too - the leaf count appears to have doubled in the last week. Not too sure when the best time is to plant these out...? Any collective wisdom greatly appreciated.

The fennel is starting to produce it's second set of leaves, which are those feathery tendrils - good to see! Again - not too sure when it is best to plant these out, but they seem too weak at the moment, so I'll leave them until they are a lot stronger and more established.

And finally, back to the beans!:

A grower's dream... pods in abundance!

  1. We plant out beetroot grown in modules when they have developed some healthy true leaves and have a good root system - if they have little root then the compost just falls off when you try to plant them. It's a bit like we would for lettuce. Must admit though we have planted beetroot directly in the ground this year.

Our radish never seem to do well when grown in pots etc - they don't seem to develop the 'roots' so we always directly sow these too. I'll be interested to see how yours grow.

    1. Thanks Sue - I've just got back from holiday, and since this post the beetroot seedlings have grown more leaves and are approaching the state that you mention... so I'll pluck up the courage soon and plant them out at the plot.

The radish on the other hand are starting to go a bit yellow... perhaps as you say because they are in short drills and cannot develop the roots. I did a different variety a few years ago (Scarlet Globe) started out in drills and then planted out into a deep tub, and they grew nice and plump. I'm not sure this longer variety of radish is faring as well, but I'll keep you posted!
